Midnight Sun Flycasters

MSFC Services and Sponsored Activities

The Midnight Sun Flycasters club supports fishing, conservation of fishing resources, and tying flies. The folowing services and activities are available to interested fly-fishermen.

The club owns and maintains a fly tying kit designed for teaching fly tying to students of all ages. Included in the kit are the hooks, feathers, fur, and tools (vises, bobbins, scissors) for a class of 8-10 students. Club members have used the kit to teach to students from 4th through 12th grade. The kit can also be used for adult classes. Call a club board member for reservations and access to this service.

The club invites guest speakers to its meetings. Meeting are usually held between October and May. These speakers might be famous fly-fishing authors (Jack Dennis), Alaskan fish experts, members with stories and pictures from recent fishing trips (Situk River, Christmas Island, Southwest Alaska, Mexico), or government employees (Alaska Department of Fish and Game) presenting pertinent fish information.

The club participates in Fishing is Fun Day around Memorial Day each year . Members help kids learn the basics of fly-casting, fly-tying, and fish biology. The most exciting opportunity is helping kids catch fish in a stocked pond. This popular day allows kids a chance to catch a fish or two and "warm up" to the sport of fishing. This event is held on Alaska Department of Fish and Game property each year.

Following Fishing is Fun Day, the annual Kid's Camp is usually held at Twin Bears Camp on Chena Hot Springs Road.  MSFC sponsors a scholarship for a young recruit to attend.

The club is a member of the Federation of Flyfishers and has access to pamphlets, teaching tools, and the expertise of a national fishing organization. Several of our members make the annual trip to the national conclave. This annual convention keeps our members in touch with trends in the sport of fly-fishing. The club also works closely with the local chapter of Trout Unlimited in bringing guest speakers to Fairbanks, and promoting the sport throughout Interior Alaska.
